It's no wonder that camping trips are becoming increasingly popular. They offer pure freedom. You decide where to go, where to stop, and what to experience. Camping trips are usually a real adventure where you can't predict the exact course. It's similar when you plan to convert your camper van. This project is also a real adventure that can be truly challenging – but here too, you can determine the journey and destination, or rather, the equipment of your camper van, yourself.

That's why we at Moby Van make it easier for camping enthusiasts to convert their camper van themselves. We offer camper modules for the VW T5, T6, and T6.1 panel vans, which can be installed by self-assembly. In our shop, you'll also find various accessories for camper van conversion. With our module solutions, you can easily implement your camper conversion ideas.

Converting or Buying a Camper Van – What's Recommended?

Converting a camper yourself is a real challenge, and you should be aware of that before starting your conversion project. Craftsmanship and knowledge are naturally required to master the conversion. But: many things can be learned! So, if you are willing to invest the time in acquiring the knowledge and performing the conversion, then a DIY build is an option for you. Our furniture lines make it easy for you, as you can rely on well-thought-out complete solutions for the most important components.

Considerably less effort is involved in buying an already converted camper. We at Moby Van also offer this. Simply tell us your wishes – and we will implement them. Entrusting the camper conversion to professionals protects against unpleasant surprises and mistakes, but it is, of course, more expensive than a DIY build.

What are the costs I should expect?

The cost of your camper conversion will, of course, be determined by your individual conversion preferences. If you build a luxury camper yourself, it can cost more than a converted basic camper. Therefore, it is difficult to give a general price for the conversion.

However, for a first estimate, you can expect the following costs: First, you have to buy a vehicle. Here, too, the prices naturally differ depending on whether you buy a new or used van or transporter. Inexpensive used vehicles can be purchased for between 5,000 and 10,000 Euros. In addition, a low to medium four-figure sum will be added for basic equipment. But as mentioned: there is practically no upper limit.

However, self-assembly is almost certainly cheaper than a converted camper: converted campers in good condition are rarely found for under 40,000 Euros.

The right model for the camper conversion

Before you can start with the conversion, you need to find the right vehicle for your project. We have specialized in the VW T5, T6, and T6.1 panel vans for both our camper modules and our fully converted campers, as these models, in our opinion, offer the best overall package of spacious interior and compact overall size. However, other vans and transporters such as the Mercedes Sprinter are also popular vehicle models for self-conversion.

A camper is usually smaller than a motorhome and between 5 and 7.5 meters long. It should be noted that for campers over 6 meters in length, higher costs are often incurred on toll roads, car ferries, and other chargeable routes. The standing height of the camper is also crucial. We recommend choosing at least 1.80 m, as you must consider that a few centimeters will still be lost due to insulation.

Campervan Conversion: A Step-by-Step Guide

Converting a camper van is a complex project. Therefore, a structured and planned approach is essential.

1. Planning the Expansion

Before you start, the conversion should be well planned and a conversion concept created. You should consider what kind of trips you want to take with your camper and what interior equipment is needed for that. You should also check the tax implications of certain conversion ideas in advance. Other questions to clarify are water and electricity connections as well as the possible installation of additional windows. In addition, you should of course have already found the right vehicle, because in all planning you must always keep an eye on the permissible maximum weight of the vehicle.

2. Clean and prepare vehicle

The first practical steps in a camper conversion involve the vehicle itself. Depending on its condition, it should be emptied, thoroughly cleaned, and freed from rust. Cavities must be sealed to prevent rust from forming there.

3. Install windows

If you want additional windows, they should be installed at the beginning of the conversion. This is particularly recommended if you are converting a windowless van into a camper. In our shop, you will find special panes and windows for campers. You can cut out the window openings with a jigsaw, after which the edges must be sanded and cleaned. Then you can glue in the window. Make sure that the seal closes seamlessly...

4. Laying insulation, cables, and pipes

Before you start with the interior conversion, insulation should be installed, and cables and hoses for electricity and water laid. You can also find well-thought-out solutions for this in our shop. For the installation of the camper's electrical system, we strongly advise consulting a specialist, as mistakes here can be life-threatening.

5. Interior Trim

In the next step, you can install the interior cladding on floors and walls. Wood is popular here, but felt and other materials are also an option. In our shop you will find suitable solutions.

6. Interior Design

The first practical steps in a camper conversion involve the vehicle itself. Depending on its condition, it should be emptied, thoroughly cleaned, and rust removed. Cavities must be sealed to prevent rust from forming there.
