Frequently Asked Questions
That depends on how often and how independently you want to travel. If you mainly use your van for short weekend trips, an inexpensive and robust AGM battery will suit you perfectly. However, if you are on the road regularly, it is best to choose a LiFePO4 lithium battery. It scores points with its minimal weight, extremely fast charging times, and high usable energy capacity.
If you only need light, to charge your smartphone, and to run the water pump, a small capacity of 50 to 80 Ah is sufficient. If you are also running a refrigerator, parking heater, or laptop for work in your van, you are on the safe side with 80 to 120 Ah.
For a 100 Ah AGM battery, for example, only about 50 percent is usable for safety reasons, which corresponds to around 600 watt-hours. If you use little power for lighting and charging cables, that power will last for two to four days. As soon as a cooler runs continuously, the range shrinks to one to three days, and with intensive use involving a heater or laptop, to one to two days. You can easily extend this timeframe using a solar panel on the roof.
